Where to celebrate the 4th of July this year!

Despite economic recession, our country’s Independence Day in South Florida will be celebrated to the fullest extent!

In 2009, the 4th of July in Miami, Broward, and Palm Beach County will bring fireworks to beaches and parks across the tri-county. Where can you catch a great display of fireworks and celebrate this year?

Deerfield Beach in Broward County, will hold its annual All-American 4th of July Celebration, at the beach, starting from the pier heading north. Events on Saturday will begin early, with games for children, water balloons, slides and tons of refreshing summer activities! Local bands will also join in starting at around 3pm, and will continue on until the fireworks after sun-down!

Those looking for a parade may want to head over to Sunrise, at 10am. The parade will be along Sunset Strip starting at NW 12th street, all the way down to City Park. There will be children’s activities, ride and free food until 1pm. From 6-10pm, at the Bank Atlantic Center, there will be bounce houses for the kides, face painters, and other fun activities. Rain or shine!

In Miami-Dade County, head on over to Coconut Grove, for an entire day and night filled with fun! Enjoy games and food for adults and children, and various local bands as well! Fireworks will be held at 9pm, at Peacock Park.

Those in the Boca Raton area can see fireworks shoot off at around 9pm, at Florida Atlantic University off of Glades Road. There will also be fireworks at Boynton Beach at Intracoastal Park, and at Delray Beach at then end of Atlantic Ave, starting at 9pm.

Miami Volleyball Tournament to the Extreme!

Two women’s volleyball events will be taking place in Miami over the next week through the fourth of July weekend. The two events will bring young girls from across the country to compete at the 2009 US Jr. Olympics Volleyball Competition, and women from all over South, Central and North America, to compete in the 2009 Pan American Cup.

The Jr Olympics volleyball tournament will bring over 9,500 girls from ages 12-18 to compete for national titles. Volleyball recruiters from colleges and universities across the nation will attend to search for prospectives students and players.

The Pan Am Cup will certainly be the highlight of the weekend, with a diverse audience. The tournament will begin with group rounds first, which have been divided as follows:

Group A: United States, USA, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Mexico, Peru, Puerto Rico
Group B: Brazil, Argentina, Canada, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Trinidad and Tobago

Scheduled games and events will begin Friday, June 26th, 2009.

Fiesta, Fiesta! – Cinco de Mayo in Miami – Party Time!

To be fair, the 5th of May holiday is truly a Mexican Holiday, that somehow trickled its way into American culture as a day to party. The day celebrates the Mexican Army’s victory at the Battle of Puebla, even though they were well outnumbered and less equipped with arms than their French army opposition. Way to go Mexico!

And to note, this is NOT the Mexican Independence Day, as many Americans believe. But that is not much of a concern to most, as Cino de Mayo in the U.S. is used by many Americans as an excuse to drink tequila and wear a sombrero!

Need places to go? No problem! Cinco de Mayo in Miami leaves you with plenty of options. Check out Senor Frogs in Coconut Grove or in South Beach, or just head down to Ocean Drive in Miami. You will not find a venue or restaurant along this strip today that is not serving up a Mexican treat!

National Park Week Boat Rides in Key Biscayne

This week is National Park Week! The week was designated by the president to honor and celebrate the parks, lands, and national monuments that we have in our country. Hundreds of special events all across the country will be taking place from April 18th through April 26th , such as Junior Park Ranger days, and other special environmental day programs for children that allow for learning and fun!

South Florida residents are lucky enough to call beautiful tropical surroundings their home. At the Biscayne National Park, you can learn more about the unique ecosystem that exists in our waters and the wildlife that lives in and around Biscayne Bay, all the way through to the Florida Keys.

National Park Week at Biscayne National Park is offering boat rides from Biscayne Bay to the Northern part of the Keys for $20 per seat. This wonderful opportunity offers a learning experience for you and your family, allowing you to explore the waters of the Biscayne Bay and Florida Keys. Miami Dance Festival 2009

From April 1st – May 10th, you will have the opportunity to see dance styles from all over the world, from every culture, at venues across Miami during the Miami Dance Festival 2009. This 6-week event is jammed packed with dance, dance, and more dance! Performances range from Ballet Flamenco to contemporary dance, with something for every taste and style. Rescue Rocks the Runway – Dog Fashion Show in Miami

This past weekend, Paws 4 You Rescue teamed up with a clothing line company for dog’s called Toru, to host an event for homeless dogs in Miami. This one day event was held in Coconut Grove with the main purpose of getting many adoptable dogs that were scheduled to be euthanized, into loving homes.

The dogs were escorted down the “dog-walk” by real models, and each pup was suited up with a t-shirt or hoodie designed by Toru. A live DJ provided music for the show, and allowed this little rascals to really get groovy!

The rescue group and Toru were very please with the event, as many of the dogs were adopted and went to good homes. They also took in over $5,000 in ticket sales will go towards paying for the event, as well as veterinary bills for the dogs at the rescue.

Las Artes de Mexico at the University of Miami

The collection includes exhibits of Mexican art and culture featuring the ancient civilizations of the Aztecs and the Mayans all the way through to current and modern art of the 20th century. Las Artes de Mexico is being displayed at the University of Miami through April 5th, 2009. Due to the large population of Latin cultures in the Coral Gables area, including many of Mexican decent, the exhibit has been quite popular and has had many visitor over the past few months.

Saint Patrick’s Day 2009 – South Florida Celebrates!

All across South Florida today, all the way from the Florida Keys, Miami, Pompano Beach, up to West Palm Beach, the flooding of green shirts, pins, pants, hats and more have taken the streets as they celebrate Saint Patrick’s Day!

Take a visit to one of the Irish Pubs in Miami like Playwright or Clarke’s in South Beach, and while you are there you can even try yourself a pint of green beer. O’Shea’s Irish Pub in West Palm Beach also will celebrate with many green beers and a room full of green attire.

The Saint “Paddy’s” Day has grown across the world, and although rooted in its history as a Christian holiday in Ireland, it is now celebrated by Christians and non-Christian alike by wearing the color green and eating or drinking green colored food. (I have even seen some strange things like green mashed potatoes, which I could not bear to try)

Heat versus Celtics – Tonight!

After leaving a bitter cold Boston area with a temperature of 23 degrees, the Celtics will certainly be happy to travel to Miami for their game against the Heat tonight.

The Celtics will being going into this game tonight with much tension, having 5 regular players currently unable to play due to injuries. And with Wade’s performances recently, the Miami Heat are looking in good shape to take a victory tonight over the Celtics. The Celtics did take a victory over Miami in January, with a final score of 98-83.

Tonight’s game will begin at 7:30pm, at the American Airlines Arena in Downtown Miami.

Calle Ocho – Carnaval Miami 2009 is here!

It is that time again! Come celebrate Latin culture in Miami at the Calle Ocho Festival, a part of the 2-week Carnaval Miami event.

This will be one of the biggest street parties you will ever be a part of, as you walk the street filled with vendors offering Latin foods of every flavor, musical performances on every block, children’s activities, and even some freebies along the way! Musical performances are nearly every block from 11th Avenue, all the way to 27th Avenue, and include huge stars like Pitbull, Fat Joe, Brook Hogan, Shaggy, Eddy Lover, and many, many more!

Calla Ocho 2009 will be held this Sunday, March 15th, from 11am-7pm, giving you plenty of time to party in the street with thousands of others from Miami, South Florida, and across the world!
